[NBA] : The origins of the City Edition jerseys of each NBA team * Part 2 *
The month of November was marked by the creation of jerseys called “City Edition”. The purpose of these jerseys is to pay homage to the city hosting the franchises by creating jersey models specific to their culture, for example the Miami Heat jersey in light colors (blue) and which reminds us of the sunny weather in the region.
Each of the 30 franchises have a City Edition jersey with a story behind and we explain everything to you. Here are the jerseys of the Western conference:
Deep Ellum, a vibrant Dallas neighborhood known for its colorful murals and eclectic nightlife, inspired the team's jerseys with graffiti-style lettering "Mavs" and a supercharged palette of the Dallas skyline. The Mavericks collaborated with Tex Moton, co-founder of the graffiti artist group Infinite Crew and creative director of the Design Co., to develop a look that "truly testifies to Dallas' incredible art scene," said the club in an outing. The team says the jersey celebrates "the new life and new direction of the Mavs" by fitting into the fabric of the Dallas community. “Deep in the Heart” also appears on the jock jersey label.
The Nuggets keep the same design elements, but go from white to black. This uniform is a celebration of the people and neighborhoods that make Mile High Basketball and Denver unique. This City Edition jersey brought back the iconic design of the rainbow and honored the Denver Nuggets of the past, focusing on the players who shaped the rich history of basketball in Denver. The design was inspired by the original Rainbow Skyline team uniform which was worn by the 1981-1982 season team until 1992-1993. The original logo was created by the fans. Before the 1981 season, Carl Sheer had created a fan competition in which everyone could participate. The Nuggets staff therefore decided to keep the design of the winner.
GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
A black base roots the uniform as his team moves to a new home across the bay after 47 years in Oakland. The jersey is flanked by silver-trimmed side panels for city bridges and adorned with a stylized interpretation of the famous Oakland tree.
The NASA-inspired Houston Rockets City Edition jersey evokes Houston's historic and current relationships with the Space Agency. Houston's connotation for space exploration comes down to the white and silver accents of the jersey, inspired by space suits. The word “H-Town” is printed on the chest in a new font. This word is the nickname for the city of Houston. It can also be inspired by the R&B group “H-Town” which also comes from Houston, created in 1992.
LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS
This jersey has generated a lot of enthusiasm on the Internet. ⠀ The new Clippers look evokes a Californian atmosphere called “Cali Vibe”. ⠀ Nike seems to have been strongly inspired by the style of NWA with the famous “Compton” cap but also by the iconic video game “GTA San Andreas”.
LOS ANGELES LAKERS
The Los Angeles Lakers have always had the recognition of famous players in the franchise as their lineage. Last year's edition aimed to honor Magic Johnson, this year it's Shaquille Oneal's turn to be honored. The jersey includes vintage graphics with drop shadow, a triangle-shaped necklace and vortex-shaped inserts like an ode in the center of 7'2 ”as well as its unstoppable fall.
The sky blue and icy color of the new jersey reflects the ubiquitous blue waters in cities, including the Mississippi River, which is to the left of the jersey. The outline of the river begins at the collar of the uniform and flows south to the bottom of the jersey. An illustrative icon on the waistband of the shorts represents the last city in the east, the first city in the west, connected by the mighty Mississippi River in an eye-catching design.
NEW ORLEANS PELICANS
The Pelicans City Edition jersey represents the history and tradition of the carnival season, inspired by the vibrant colors of Mardi Gras - purple, green and gold. It sports "NOLA" on the chest in the Pelicans signature font with white letters highlighted in gold. The ligature at the bottom of the neck represents a traditional “ducal krewe” of mardi gras. The phrase, "Let the good times roll" is at the bottom left of the jersey, which is the unofficial motto of New Orleans.
OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
This year's uniform was created in partnership with the Oklahoma City National Museum and Memorial to honor the city's courage following the devastating bombings in April 1995. The white background on the sides of the shorts represents the site's reflecting pool. "Service", "Honor" and "Kindness" appear above the jersey label.
The jersey consists of a midnight black jersey with classic purple and orange Suns trims and the "Los Suns" logo on the chest. The matching black shorts have a splash of color and an ode to the Arizona flag on the right leg. The Suns will debut in the Los Suns Noche City Edition jersey when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, December 9 at the Talking Stick Resort Arena.
PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS
Unlike last season’s red “City” black jersey, this year's “City” jersey is white with red “Rip City” on the chest. The Nike jersey was designed to pay tribute to the 50 years of the history of the Blazers. According to the Blazers, "the design of the City Edition uniform is a mixture of the first two Trail Blazers uniforms (seasons 1970-1971 and 1971-1975), with modern design accents and vintage coloring".
The special edition jersey once again wrote “Sactown” on the chest, but this year it's almost entirely red with white lettering and midnight blue and gray outlines. The team said the new look blends "old and new branding," using colors "that have been woven through the history of the franchise." In their early years in Sacramento, the Kings wore sky blue uniforms with red and white borders - the same color. pattern used in their City Edition uniforms for the past two seasons - but they never wore red as their primary color.
SAN ANTONIO SPURS
The Spurs will wear the same camouflage pattern as last season. The camouflage print of the San Antonio Spurs jersey expresses the city's rich military recognition, while remaining faithful to the emblematic colors of the team.
The Utah Jazz bring back their famous City Edition jerseys, inspired by the rock formations that shape the magnificent landscape of the state. The highways that lead from Salt Lake City to the renowned national parks of Utah are marked on the side panels with graphic interpretations of I-15 and I-70.
